MAGNETIC DRIVE COUPLING
Steve Thone from homebuitrovs.com had an idea. Keep the electrical motors in a water tight enclosure
to protect them from water damage and transmit the rotational force via a magnetic coupling device to turn the props or whatever you
are turning so, this way you don't have to worry about a stuffing box for the shaft and possible water leaks into the motor.
Sound
like a great idea for ROV application.
Although it is not an innovative idea (it has been done before) I just love the challenge.
The
pictures show my complete project.
The result was a total failure.
The fault lies on the magnets I picked. The poles
were at each end of the mags and not much on the sides, which is where you actually need it.
They should have been flat mags at least
twice as wide. Due to lack of funds for a second try, I abandoned the idea and installed a direct drive to operate the manipulator
claw.
I'll wait for Steve Thone to give his idea a second try.
